Be sure to sign up for one or more of Wired and Fired's glass fusing classes.  We are offering 2 hour classes on Wednesday evenings in the month of August for those who would like to create with an instructor.  We have 4 classes offering 4 different projects that can be personalized to each artists taste.  The classes will take place in our private party room and will be lead by our store manager and resident glass expert, Paul. EMILY AMY GALLERY is pleased to present our summer buy local feature for 2012, Ashley Anderson’s newly completed series, Shinobi Marilyn. The exciting new series consists of works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, digital collage, and animated gifs. The body of work was initially inspired by an online discovery of imagery embedded in a classic sega video game from 1987, entitled “Shinobi.” Convinced the appearance of Marilyn Monroe in the classic game was a posthumous tribute to Andy Warhol created by the game designer in 1980's Japan, Anderson sought to explore the subject further.

Crawford Moran recently selected as the top brewer in the metro Atlanta/Athens craft brewing scene by StarChefs and received their Artisan Brewer award.

The co-owner for 5 Seasons Westside and 5 Seasons North was recently selected as the top brewer in the metro Atlanta/Athens craft brewing scene by StarChefs and received their Artisan Brewer award.

The Artisan Brewer award is given to the individual brewer in the region who is creating the best, most unique, highest quality beers in the craft-brewing scene. A gala and awards ceremony was held last month at the Goat Farm to honor and recognize the top chefs, top brewer, top barista and top mixologist selected as Atlanta’s Rising Stars.

My new favorite spot to grab a light breakfast, a lunchtime sandwich or a spot of tea while I write. Świt (break of dawn in Polish) just landed on the Westside a couple of months ago and is already garnering a loyal following among the residents as well as Westside businesses. Unlike the popular Octane across the street, Świt is quiet, bright and inviting. This European bakery and cafe serves up fresh baked breads, pastries, coffees, teas and sandwiches from the old country.  They take pride in the craftsmanship of their breads and baked goods which is evident upon first bite into any of their tasty treats.

Make sure to try this little gem the next time you’re in the Westside district.  Bring a good book and sip a cup of tea with cookies on the couch, plug in your computer and blog away (free wifi) at the community table or enjoy a sandwich or a pastry on the patio while you soak in the sun.  Świt Bakery and Cafe, a little bit of Europe in the heart of the South.

First Look: The Optimist, west Midtown | accessAtlanta

The Optimist, the third restaurant from Ford Fry of JCT Kitchen and No. 246, offers a fresh daily catch of sustainable seafood simply prepared in the kitchen’s wood-burning ovens and grills. The name refers to a small sailing dinghy, and the casual fine dining concept conjures up coastal fish camps, oyster bars and beach vacations.

The look: Situated in an early 1900s building on Howell Mill Road, at the nexus of booming west Midtown, the design by Smith Hanes ranges from the raucous to the understated. The surfboard-shaped Oyster Bar near the entrance is inspired by the wild styles of Venice Beach. The elegant hangarlike main dining room features shades of white and wood under soaring steel trusses and an exposed plank ceiling.

The scene: At dinner one evening, there was that unmistakable new restaurant buzz of anticipation in the air, as small crowds gathered around the dining room. 

At the wide, walnut-topped cocktail bar, a woman regarded the smoked salmon and caper berry garnish perched on the rim of a pink gin martini named The Truth as We Know It.

The menu: Executive chef Adam Evans mingles familiar seafood dishes with a variety of modern touches. Wood-roasted Florida grouper ($26) is topped with smoked Vidalia onion and served in a bowl of horseradish broth. Duck fat-poached swordfish ($24) comes with pickled sweet peppers and crispy pancetta. At lunch, soft-shell crab cioppino ($18) is a melange of garlicky tomato broth, potato, corn and clams.

The drinks: Beverage director Lara Creasy put together a wine list drawn from coastal regions around the world and chose draft beers from American craft breweries in port cities such as Baltimore, Boston and San Diego. The Oyster Bar features a daily punch with seasonal fruit and “oyster backs” ($5) made to pair with raw bar specials. Recently, the Sea Grass mixed Bison Grass vodka, Dolin Blanc vermouth and fresh tarragon.

The extras: Outside, look for a patio with cafe-style seating under an awning, and coming soon, a two-hole putt-putt golf course.

I know this is a little past due as far as posting goes - but I just found out about it but I think it's worth a post!

Curbed Cup 2011 Atlanta: The Final Four

The Curbed Cup, our first annual award to the Atlanta neighborhood of the year, kicked of with 8 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. Here is the updated bracket with the Final Four. Voting for the next round pairing begins after the holidays, get ready!

Well, it was a week of spectacular contests, with come of Atlanta's most treasured neighborhoods fighting each other tooth and nail for (virtual) possession of the (fake) trophy. The week started with East Lake trouncing the lone suburban interloper Sandy Springs. This was followed by quiet, mellow Candler Park getting nosed out by the upstart food and decor magnetMidtown West. Wednesday will forever be a day of infamy...Decatur and Inman Park were engaged in a pretty close match before Inman Park mobilized its legions and delivered one of the biggest beat-downs ever seen on a Curbed site pole anywhere. Finally, yesterday, Virginia Highland scored a surprisingly handy victory over its conjoined sibling Midtown, and our final four was determined. Everyone go rest up over the holiday weekend, and when we return next week, we'll witness the next round of eliminations as we move into the championship round and the awarding of the coveted Curbed Cup 2011 to Atlanta's Best Neighborhood. Merry Christmas!

The creative mind in charge of brewing at these two 5 Seasons is head brewer Crawford Moran, formerly of Dogwood. Currently the largest in the state, Moran’s brew system at the Westside location is every brewer’s wet dream — and powered by the restaurant’s fryer grease. The food out of owner/chef Dave Larkworthy’s kitchen catapults this brew house to “gastropub” status. The upstairs sky bar is a fine seat to take in Moran’s crafty beers and Larkworthy’s local farm inspired menu.

Facebook Opens Office in West Midtown

Facebook has opened in West Midtown.

The Palo Alto-based social networking website has leased a 5,045-square-foot office located in the Brickworks Midtown West development.

Brickworks is a mixed-use development at Marietta Street and Howell Mill Road and is anchored by 5 Seasons Brewing restaurant. 1000 Marietta Street, NW 


Facebook has an existing office in Atlanta, which according to the company’s website is “one of the fastest growing offices in the East Region.”

WAD: The Westside Arts District

As tomorrow is the third Saturday of November, the art galleries on our side of town, including Emily Amy Gallery of the BrickWorks, are gearing up for the Westside Arts Walk.  All participating art spaces are located roughly between Howell Mill Road at 14th street, and the intersection of Means and Marietta Streets.  Just west of Midtown.

Comprised of ten different spaces, including 8 galleries, plus Octane Coffee and the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, WAD offers locals and visitors alike a free opportunity to view art, meet artists, and learn more about the contemporary arts scene in the city.  The third Saturday of each month, WAD puts on an arts walk during which many of the galleries will feature a lecture by an exhibiting artist, a musician playing in the gallery space, or a film screening just to name a few past events.  As several of the participating galleries, including Get This! Gallery and SALTWORKS, have openings tomorrow evening, their new shows will be previewed during the walk.  In the case of Get This!, the artist Veronica De Jesus will be giving a talk at noon as part of the walk to the backdrop of her solo show which opens hours later.


If you plan on heading over to the Westside for the WAD walk tomorrow, be sure to stop in at the BrickWorks, as Emily Amy Gallery is located here!  EAG recently had an opening featuring two New-England based artists, (including the image found above by Jen Bradley), whose works will be up for viewing during the walk.  


All galleries are open free of charge, and the Contemporary is just $5 to enter (members free).  All sites have free parking as well.  The featured galleries include: Emily Amy Gallery, Sandler Hudson Gallery, Kiang Gallery, TWIN KITTENS, Tanner Hill Gallery, Astolfi Art, Get This! Gallery and SALTWORKS.  More complete information about tomorrow's walk and about individual shows can be found here.  Be sure to grab a beer up on the roof of 5 Seasons Brewery after finishing your tour of the Westside galleries, its supposed to be sunny and 68 degrees tomorrow.  All the more reason to get out and see some art.
