It is SCARY to think that Halloween is already here. This fall seems to be just flying by! And as you know we're always ready to celebrate a new season at the drop of a hat. So we'll be ushering in the cool weather with our 6th Annual Tapping of the Great Gourd! 

This time every year we release our Great Pumpkin Ale (we're always waiting on the Great Pumpkin). We brewed it with over 400 lbs of fresh, local, organic pumpkins. For Thursday we actually fill a HUGE pumpkin weighing over 300 lbs with the beer, then drive a tap directly into it and then pour the beer straight out of the pumpkin! It's a lot of fun. We'll tap at 5 Westside at 7:55 PM.

Deadline to Preorder New Harvest Olive Oil Is Almost Here!

Just a quick reminder that the deadline to preorder the new harvest, freshly pressed EVOO from the estate of Fattoria Valacchi located in the heart of Chianti, Tuscany is this Thursday, November 1st (we extended the date a couple days).  We must have payment at the time of preorder to guarantee that you receive the olive oil. We cannot order without payment.  All preorder sales are final. We'll have limited quantities of the oil after it comes in for general sales in the store.  This olive oil is available in 250ml (8.8 oz) and 500ml (17 oz) quantities and you can either supply your own container(s) or purchase bottles from us. Additionally, if you want to purchase a 5 liter tin, like the ones we receive the oil in, you can do that also.  Pricing as follows: 250ml -- $12 500ml -- $23 5 ltr tin - $230 (5 ltr tins only available during pre-order) If you've never experienced the exquisite pleasure of the first press of olive oil, you're in for a huge treat!  With the upcoming holidays, this is a great gift for the foodie in your life or anyone who appreciates great olive oil. Ford Fry has brought his optimism about the West Midtown dining scene to another Howell Mill Road location. The Optimist is located just up the street from his other west side eatery, JCT Kitchen. The new space, located inside a former ham warehouse, has been transformed into what is apparently the designer’s idea of a fish camp. Now, I have been to a couple fish camps in the past and the good news for us is that this beautifully designed and fastidiously detailed space is nothing like any of the dank fish camps I have ever visited.

EMILY AMY GALLERY is pleased to present our summer buy local feature for 2012, Ashley Anderson’s newly completed series, Shinobi Marilyn. The exciting new series consists of works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, digital collage, and animated gifs. The body of work was initially inspired by an online discovery of imagery embedded in a classic sega video game from 1987, entitled “Shinobi.” Convinced the appearance of Marilyn Monroe in the classic game was a posthumous tribute to Andy Warhol created by the game designer in 1980's Japan, Anderson sought to explore the subject further.

The co-owner for 5 Seasons Westside and 5 Seasons North was recently selected as the top brewer in the metro Atlanta/Athens craft brewing scene by StarChefs and received their Artisan Brewer award.

The Artisan Brewer award is given to the individual brewer in the region who is creating the best, most unique, highest quality beers in the craft-brewing scene. A gala and awards ceremony was held last month at the Goat Farm to honor and recognize the top chefs, top brewer, top barista and top mixologist selected as Atlanta’s Rising Stars.

My new favorite spot to grab a light breakfast, a lunchtime sandwich or a spot of tea while I write. Świt (break of dawn in Polish) just landed on the Westside a couple of months ago and is already garnering a loyal following among the residents as well as Westside businesses. Unlike the popular Octane across the street, Świt is quiet, bright and inviting. This European bakery and cafe serves up fresh baked breads, pastries, coffees, teas and sandwiches from the old country.  They take pride in the craftsmanship of their breads and baked goods which is evident upon first bite into any of their tasty treats.

Make sure to try this little gem the next time you’re in the Westside district.  Bring a good book and sip a cup of tea with cookies on the couch, plug in your computer and blog away (free wifi) at the community table or enjoy a sandwich or a pastry on the patio while you soak in the sun.  Świt Bakery and Cafe, a little bit of Europe in the heart of the South.
